Recent findings highlight the dangers of sugary drinks. Deciding to give up just one glass of ANY sugary drink a day decreases you chance of getting Type 2 Diabetes by 25%. Drinking unsweetened tea, coffee or any other drink will cut the risk dramatically.
“Our new findings on the potential to reduce the burden of diabetes by reducing the percentage of energy consumed from sweet beverages add further important evidence to the recommendations from the World Health Organisation to limit the intake of free sugars in our diet’, said the surdies lead scientist Nita Forouhi, of the UK Medical Research Council epidemiology department of Cambridge University, Cambridge, UK.
The study followed 25,000 people aged between 40 and 79 for close to 11 years. They found that beverages that were sweetened by sugar were contributing to the increased risks of Type 2 diabetes while drinks sweetened by artificial sweeteners were not.
By cutting out 2 sugary drinks the risks dropped to 33 percent.
More than three million brits suffer from Type 2 diabetes and this figure is expected to rise to 5 million by 2025 and this is mostly caused by obesity. Imagine the impact on the US and other countries with obesity problems.
Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin, or the bodies cells do not react to insulin, this is the chemical that help sugar get to the bodies cells where it is used as energy. If too much sugar builds up in the blood it causes damage and prevents cells getting the energy they need to work properly. This increases the risk of strokes, kidney disease, and vision. Untreated diabetes can lead to death.
